What is Occupational Health? |
|
Occupational Health (sometimes called “Occ Health” or “O.H.”), is an area of proactive health care and as a specialty, is concerned with the relationship between work, the working environment and health of the employee. Having an Occupational Health Service can help you as an employee and your business to fulfill your statutory duties to ensure a safe and healthy working environment, assist in undertaking risk assessments, carry out health surveillance, protect the vulnerable and employ people with disabilities. In the UK there is a climate of increasing legislation, with new UK Government initiatives and targets. Therefore the need for an integrated approach to occupational health and rehabilitation initiatives has increased. Having correct skilled advice in these situations can save business thousands of pounds in sick pay and getting valuable employee's back to work as fast a possible. The Health & Safety at Work (General) Guernsey Ordinance (1987) is presently the only Legislation in force in Guernsey, we at OHCI Limited undertake all work by means of best practice guidance to enable employers to meet current UK Legislation. Including the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) where advice can be given. There are positive potential benefits to be gained from having access to a comprehensive Occupational Health Service. These include: Improved overall health and fitness at individual and organizational levels. Reduced absenteeism / ill health / staff turnover. Reduced accident / incident figures. Reduction in potential litigation / organizational risk. Reduced incidence of industrial injuries / occupational ill health. Improved morale / motivation / performance. Enhanced job satisfaction. Reduced stress / burnout. Employees making informed choices on their health and safety and well being whilst at work |
